Walk-In Cooler Running Warm? Do These Things in Order

The immediate steps that protect your inventory, the causes behind temperature drift, and why 'still cold enough' is the expensive answer.

Right now, before anything else

Keep the door closed and traffic minimal. Don't stack product against the evaporator — it needs airflow to work. If the evaporator is visibly iced, do not chip at it; punctured coils turn a controls repair into a coil replacement. Then call. Refrigeration-down calls move to the front of our line because we know what a warm walk-in costs per hour.

What drift usually means

A walk-in creeping above setpoint is a system compensating: a defrost failure building ice that blocks airflow, a dirty condenser fighting summer ambient heat, door gaskets leaking humid air that becomes evaporator ice, or a slow refrigerant leak. Compensating systems fail suddenly, at full inventory, on weekends — drift is the only warning most of them give.

The prevention math

A pre-summer preventive visit — coils cleaned, charge verified, defrost cycles tested, gaskets checked — costs a fraction of one spoiled walk-in. Gaskets deserve special mention: the cheapest parts on the box quietly run the energy bill up and the compressor down every hour they seal wrong.
