The honest economics of furnace repair

Furnace repair pricing mostly comes down to the failed part and the access. Ignitors, flame sensors, and capacitors sit at the affordable end and usually finish in one visit because we stock them on the truck. Blower motors, draft inducers, and control boards cost more, and heat exchanger failures are almost always a replacement conversation instead — running a furnace with a compromised exchanger isn't something we'll leave you doing.

Age changes the math. On a furnace under ten years old, nearly every repair is worth making. Between ten and fifteen, we weigh the repair against remaining life honestly. Past fifteen, we'll still fix it if that's your call — but we'll show you what the same dollars look like against a new high-efficiency system with financing, because sometimes the monthly payment on new equipment is less than the annual repair bills on old equipment.

One thing we don't do: diagnostic roulette. You pay for a diagnosis once, we show you the failed component, and the quote you approve is the price you pay.

Timing & season

The first real cold snap — usually late November through December around here — is when marginal furnaces die, and when every HVAC company's phone rings at once. A fall tune-up catches most of those failures in October when parts are on the shelf and schedules are open. If your furnace struggled at the end of last season, don't gamble it through another one.

From the technician's side

On every repair call we check temperature rise against the nameplate range, static pressure, and gas manifold pressure. Half the 'failing furnaces' we see are actually healthy units being suffocated by undersized returns or crushed flex duct — a $200 airflow fix instead of a $6,000 replacement. That's the difference between a technician who diagnoses and one who quotes.

The most common bad repair we clean up after: replacing a flame sensor or board without asking why it failed. Sensors foul from bad combustion; boards die from voltage or heat problems. Replace the part without the cause and the same failure comes back next season — on someone else's second invoice.
