Boiler Repair & Maintenance

Hydronic heat is common in Madison's older homes, and boiler work is a specialty fewer and fewer shops carry. We repair cast-iron standbys and modern condensing boilers alike — burners, circulators, zone valves, expansion tanks, and the controls that tie them together.

Boiler and radiator trouble we handle

Cold radiators in part of the loop

Trapped air, a stuck zone valve, or a tired circulator — plumbing-loop problems masquerading as boiler failures.

Kettling (rumbling like a giant teapot)

Scale on the heat exchanger flashing water to steam — it worsens efficiency now and cracks sections later.

Pressure creeping up or bleeding down

Expansion tank, fill valve, or a leak — pressure problems never fix themselves and always escalate.

Water on the floor near the boiler

From a failed relief valve to a leaking section — some versions are minor, none are ignorable.

Short bursts of firing then shutdown

Often a control, sensor, or flow issue — modern condensing boilers especially need brand-literate diagnosis.

What we handle

  • No heat or cold radiators in part of the house
  • Banging, kettling, or gurgling pipes
  • Circulator pump and zone valve failures
  • Pilot, ignition, and gas valve problems
  • Pressure loss, leaks, and expansion tank failures
  • Radiator bleeding and system balancing

How the visit works

System diagnostic

We check the boiler and the loop — pressure, circulation, air in the lines, zone controls — because half of 'boiler' problems live in the piping.

Honest repair path

Clear price on the fix. On older cast-iron units, we'll tell you frankly how much life is left before you sink money in.

Bleed, balance, verify

Air purged, pressure set, every zone confirmed heating before we leave.

The honest economics of boiler repair

Boiler repair pricing spans a wide range because the equipment does: bleeding and balancing a loop, swapping a circulator or zone valve, and replacing an expansion tank are all routine, same-visit work. Gas valves, aquastats, and ignition modules sit in the middle. Section leaks on cast iron and heat-exchanger problems on condensing boilers open the replacement conversation.

Hydronic diagnosis is where specialty pays: at least half of the 'boiler' calls we run are actually loop problems — air, circulation, or controls — that a boiler-shy generalist answers with a replacement quote. We fix what's actually broken, which is usually cheaper than what a furnace guy guesses at.

Annual service on a boiler — combustion analysis, pressure and expansion check, safety verification — costs a fraction of the repairs it prevents. Old cast iron especially rewards it: these systems run for decades when someone competent looks at them once a year.

Timing & season

Boilers announce their problems in the first week of steady firing — late October, usually. Air that accumulated all summer, a circulator that seized in the off-season, a pilot that won't relight. A September service visit clears all of that before it becomes a cold-house emergency during the first freeze.

From the technician's side

We carry a combustion analyzer, not a match and an opinion. On atmospheric cast iron we verify draft and CO; on condensing boilers we set combustion to spec at high and low fire — which is the difference between paper efficiency and actual efficiency, and something we routinely find has never been done since installation.

The area's most common boiler malpractice: treating repeated pressure loss with the fill valve instead of finding the leak — every fresh fill drags in oxygen and minerals that corrode a system designed to run on the same water for years. The second: replacing a healthy boiler because nobody could diagnose a $40 air problem.

Boiler Repair — Common Questions

Some radiators are hot and some are cold — why?

Usually air trapped in the loop, a stuck zone valve, or a failing circulator. All are routine repairs — and much cheaper than the boiler replacement a generalist might push.

Why is my boiler making a banging noise?

Kettling — mineral scale making water flash to steam — or water hammer in the pipes. Both are fixable and both get worse if ignored.

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Annually, before heating season: combustion check, pressure and expansion tank test, safety controls verified. It's the cheapest insurance a boiler owner can buy.
