The Best (and Worst) Time to Replace an HVAC System

Why shoulder-season replacements cost less stress and often less money, and how to read the signs that this is your system's last season.

The calendar has two prices

The same system installed in April and in a July heat wave differs mainly in your leverage. Shoulder-season buyers — spring for cooling, early fall for heating — choose their install week, compare quotes calmly, and are running before the first extreme day. Peak-season emergency buyers take the earliest slot anyone offers and decide under a deadline. The equipment costs what it costs; the experience doesn't.

Reading a system's last season

Two repair seasons in a row. An R-22 refrigerant system with any sealed-system problem. A compressor or heat-exchanger quote on equipment past twelve years. Cooling that never quite keeps up on the hottest days despite service. Any of these in the fall or spring is the calendar telling you to replace on your schedule instead of the equipment's.

Use the quiet months

A shoulder-season replacement also buys engineering time: a proper load calculation, a duct evaluation, staged-equipment comparisons, and financing arranged without a space heater humming in the background. Every one of those decisions is better made in sixty-five-degree weather — and each one shows up in comfort and bills for the next fifteen years.
