Why cold-climate heat pumps usually beat propane on operating cost in the Ohio Valley — and when dual-fuel is the smarter play.
Why propane loses on operating cost
Propane is the region's most expensive common heat. Every winter, homes across Jefferson, Jennings, Ripley, Trimble, and Henry counties pre-buy propane at prices that make electric resistance look competitive — and a modern heat pump delivers two to three units of heat per unit of electricity, which propane combustion can't approach.
For most propane-heated homes we quote, the heat pump's operating savings cover a meaningful share of the equipment payment. That's not a sales line; it's arithmetic we run on your actual fuel bills before recommending anything.
But do they work in our winters?
The 1995 objection doesn't survive 2020s equipment. Cold-climate heat pumps hold their rated output near 5°F — colder than almost every night the Ohio Valley sees — and keep producing below that. The handful of brutal nights each winter are what correctly sized backup heat, or a dual-fuel configuration, exist for.
When dual-fuel wins
If you already own a healthy gas or propane furnace, dual-fuel pairs it with a heat pump and switches automatically at an engineered balance point — the heat pump carries the 90% of the season it handles cheaply, the furnace takes the coldest snaps. The balance point should be calculated from your fuel prices and the equipment's capacity curve, not left on a factory default that switches over fifteen degrees too early.
