Why Your Furnace Turns On and Off Every Few Minutes

Short cycling explained — the overheating chain behind it, why it usually starts with airflow, and why ignoring it cracks heat exchangers.

What short cycling actually is

A furnace that fires, runs a few minutes, and shuts down before warming the house is almost always tripping its high-limit switch — a safety that opens when the furnace overheats internally. The furnace isn't broken so much as protecting itself from something.

The usual chain of causes

Start with airflow: a clogged filter, closed or blocked registers, a failing blower, or undersized return ducts all trap heat in the furnace cabinet. The limit trips, the furnace cools, it relights, and the cycle repeats — wearing the ignitor and stressing the heat exchanger every round.

An oversized furnace short cycles by design flaw: it satisfies the thermostat so fast it never runs a proper cycle. That one can't be repaired, only replaced correctly — which is why load calculations matter at installation time.

Why it can't wait

Every overheat event works the heat exchanger's metal. Enough cycles and it cracks — and a cracked heat exchanger is both a carbon monoxide risk and the end of the furnace. A short-cycling furnace caught early is often a filter, a blower, or a duct fix; caught late, it's a replacement.
