Six Signs Your Ducts Are Leaking (and Why It's Costing You)

How duct leaks hide behind healthy equipment, the room-by-room symptoms that reveal them, and what proper sealing actually involves.

The symptoms, room by room

One room that never matches the thermostat. Registers that whistle. Dust returning days after cleaning. Doors that slam when the blower starts. Bills that outrun your usage while the equipment tests healthy. A musty smell when air moves. Each points at the ductwork — the part of the system nobody looks at because it lives in the crawl space and attic.

Why leaks are expensive twice

Supply leaks deliver paid-for conditioned air to the spiders. Return leaks are worse: they pull attic or crawl-space air — heat, humidity, dust, and mustiness included — into the system and distribute it house-wide. Systems around here routinely lose 20-25% of their capacity this way, which is why 'we need a bigger unit' is so often the wrong conclusion drawn from the right symptoms.

What proper sealing looks like

Mastic and UL-181 metal tape on joints — the cloth stuff called duct tape has no business on ducts. Crushed flex replaced and supported taut rather than strung like holiday lights. Static pressure measured before and after, so the improvement is numbers on paper instead of a feeling. Done right, duct sealing is capacity you already owned, finally delivered.
