How dual-fuel works
A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas or propane furnace on the same ductwork. The heat pump carries the mild majority of the heating season at its unbeatable operating cost; when outdoor temperatures fall past a set balance point, the furnace takes over automatically. You burn each fuel only when it's the cheaper way to make heat.
The balance point is the product
The switchover temperature should be engineered from your actual fuel prices and the heat pump's capacity curve — the point where the declining heat pump output crosses the rising cost-effectiveness of the furnace. Factory-default thermostat settings routinely hand the house to the furnace fifteen degrees too early, quietly spending furnace money on nights the heat pump would have covered for half.
