Some Radiators Hot, Some Cold? Your Boiler Is Probably Fine

The loop problems — air, circulators, zone valves — that masquerade as boiler failures, and why hydronic diagnosis saves replacements.

Heat is being made — it isn't traveling

When some radiators heat and others don't, the boiler is usually doing its job and the water isn't completing the trip. Air trapped in the loop insulates water from metal and blocks circulation entirely at high points. A stuck zone valve strands a whole zone. A tired circulator moves water too weakly to reach the far runs.

All three are routine repairs — and all three get answered with a boiler replacement quote by companies that don't really do hydronic work. At least half the 'dying boiler' calls we run in Madison's older housing resolve in the piping, not the boiler.

The pressure clue

Glance at the boiler's pressure gauge: a typical residential system runs roughly 12-15 psi cold. Pressure near zero means the system is low on water and likely air-bound; pressure climbing toward the relief valve's limit points at the expansion tank. Both are findable, fixable faults — and both destroy comfort while the boiler itself remains healthy.

The habit that quietly kills boilers

Repeated fresh-water refills answer a symptom and feed the disease: every fill drags in oxygen and minerals that corrode a system designed to run on the same dead water for decades. If your boiler needs regular top-ups, it has a leak worth finding — not a valve worth opening.
